Do you need a certified translation of your birth certificate?

You always need a certified translation of your birth certificate if you have to present it to an authority or office, such as the registry office, and it is not in the national language.

A sworn translation of a birth certificate is typically required when you need to provide your birth certificate to a foreign government or institution in order to prove your identity. This is often required when applying for a visa, residency, or citizenship in another country.

So, if you want to move to Germany or register yourself at the local registration office (Einwohnermeldeamt) you might need the official translation of your birth certificate into german.

You’ll also need a sworn translation english-german of your birth certificate if you want to get married in Germany.

A sworn translation is an official translation that is certified by a courtappointed translator.

The certified translation is a reading aid. It does not replace the original.

You must present your original birth certificate together with the certified translation.

Make sure that you have the correct certificate translated. For example, if you have several extracts from the birth register or a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Apostille for your birth certificate

Often you also need an Apostille or Legalization if you want to submit your birth certificate abroad.

For German birth certificates we offer an Apostille Service. This means that we take care of obtaining the Apostille or legalization for you.

You never heard of this procedure before or you don’t know where to start? Then check out our “Apostille Obtaining Service” page and if you want, we will take care of the rest.

Find out beforehand if the Apostille has to be translated as well. Of course you can order the certified translation of the apostille at the same time. You can find it in the store under “Certified translation: Apostille“.

Before you order the certified translation of your birth certificate, you should note:

Birth certificates are considered legal documents that are issued to document a person’s birth, and they generally remain valid indefinitely. However, the effectiveness of a birth certificate may depend on the country or state where it was issued and the purpose for which it is being used.

In most countries, birth certificates are considered to be valid for an indefinite period of time, and they are not typically subject to expiration. However, some countries may have specific laws or regulations that govern the validity of birth certificates, and in some cases, a birth certificate may be considered invalid if it is more than a certain number of years old.

It’s important to check with the relevant authorities or institution in the country or state where the certificate was issued or where it will be used to determine if it is still valid.

Additionally, some countries may require that the birth certificate is renewed or reissued if it is damaged, lost or stolen, if the information on the certificate is no longer accurate, or if the certificate is not in a suitable format for the purpose it will be used for.

Make sure the right birth certificate is translated!
