Do you need a certified translation of your birth certificate?

You always need a certified translation of your birth certificate if you have to present it to an authority or office, such as the registry office, and it is not in the national language.

A sworn translation of a birth certificate is typically required when you need to provide your birth certificate to a foreign government or institution in order to prove your identity. This is often required when applying for a visa, residency, or citizenship in another country.

So, if you want to move to Germany or register yourself at the local registration office (“Einwohnermeldeamt”) you might need the official translation of your birth certificate into german.

You’ll also need a sworn translation english-german of your birth certificate if you want to get married in Germany.

A sworn translation is an official translation that is certified by a court–appointed translator.

The certified translation is a reading aid. It does not replace the original.

You must present your original birth certificate together with the certified translation.

Make sure that you have the correct certificate translated. For example, if you have several extracts from the birth register or a certified copy of your birth certificate.

Before you order the certified translation of your birth certificate, you should note:
