When do you need a certified translation of your civil status certificate?

The most common case is a really nice one: you want to get married. Congratulations!

In most countries, only those who are not yet married can get married. With the certificate of civil status you can prove that you are single. It is therefore also called a certificate of unmarried status.

Apostille to your certificate of civil status

To prove the authenticity of unmarried certificates from abroad, they are apostilled or legalized.

Which procedure is used depends on whether the country of issue and the country in which you want to submit the certificate of civil status are both signatories to the Hague Convention on the exemption of foreign documents from legalization.

Certified translation of the Apostille

The certified translation of your certificate of civil status into German is officially recognized in Germany. The translation does not need to be further certified.

Certified translation of the German certificate of civil status

If you need a certified translation of your German civil status certificate into another language, there are a few things to keep in mind:

First, you must have your certificate of civil status, such as your certificate of no impediment to marriage, apostilled or legalized.

You can easily use our apostille service for this. Then we will take care that the correct authentication is applied to your certificate of civil status.

Afterwards your document will be translated. Our translators are, with a few exceptions, sworn and publicly appointed in Germany, so that our translations are recognized here without further ado.

The situation is different if you have to submit the translation abroad.

Over-certification of the translation

In most cases, you will need to have the translation certified for use abroad, just as you would for your original certificate.
