Who is allowed to do certified German translations?
Translator is not a protected profession in Germany. However, not everyone is allowed to produce certified translations.
The designation of translators as well as the requirements they have to fulfill vary in Germany depending on the federal state.
In Stuttgart, one speaks of a “publicly appointed and sworn translator of documents”, in Berlin of an “authorized translator”, but in Frankfurt of a “generally authorized translator”.
In Hamburg and Saarland translators are “vereidigt” what means “sworn”, whereas in Saxony, Schleswig Holstein and Berlin they are also sworn, but it’s called “beeidigt”.
Our team member Bruno was authorized the District Court of Halle (Saale), so he is a state-recognized and publicly appointed translator for the German language.
Is the sworn translation recognized throughout Germany?
The legislations of the individual federal states all provide for proof of professional and personal suitability, therefore, according to Article 142 (3) of the German Code of Civil Procedure, the only decisive factor is that the translator has been “authorized or publicly appointed in accordance with the provisions of state law”.
Our English translators are of course recognized in Germany.
Does the certified translation replace the original document?
The sworn translator, unlike notaries, does not have public faith. Therefore, we are not authorized to certify copies, for example.
The certified translation is a reading aid and does not replace the original.
Therefore, you must present your sworn translation together with your original English document.
