Certified translation of your driver’s license

The certified translation of your driver’s license must be carried together with your driver’s license if you want to drive a vehicle in Germany and your driver’s license is not in German.

You also need the translation if you want to have your driver’s license changed to a German driver’s license.

It should always be noted that you must have reached the German minimum age for the corresponding driving license class and that your driving license must still be valid.

Have a foreign driver’s license rewritten

After six months, your driver’s license from the USA, your Mexican or Argentinean driver’s license loses its validity in Germany.

At the latest then you need a driving license issued in Germany.

For this you have to pass a theoretical and a practical test. You have to register at a driving school, but you do not have to take driving lessons.

However, it does not hurt to take a few driving lessons. Especially if you have never attended a driving school or have not driven for a long time.

You can also take the theory test in English, Spanish and many other languages.

Transfer to a German driver’s license

You must apply for the transfer of your foreign driver’s license at the driver’s license office in your place of residence. Your driver’s license must still be valid at this time.

Who makes certified translations of the driver’s license?

Who is allowed to make driving license translations? Not only the ADAC is allowed to make translations of driving licenses. Publicly appointed and sworn translators are also authorized to do so, so we can translate and classify your driver’s license.

What does classification mean?

A driver’s license is generally issued for a specific class of vehicle, such as cars or motorcycles. Since the categorizations are not identical everywhere, we add a note to the certified translation of your driver’s license.
